for open spaces in the rear of houses hereafter erected on land already sold by the Crown, is best shown by the accompany-

ing sketch plans.

The arrangement of kitchen and yard is in accordance

with the suggestions of Messrs. Chadwick and Simpson. Scaveng- ing lanes are also provided for in accordance with their re-

commendations.

Sub-section (c) explains itself.

Sub-section (d) is intended to meet the

rs, thus

possibility of the owner of a block of houses deciding to pull

down every third house so as to enable the storeys of the

houses to be lighted and ventilated by lateral windows, providing for a window into each cubicle on such storeys and

thereby enabling the cubicles to be occupied in the proportion

of one adult to every 30 square feet of superficial floor

area and 400 cubic feet of air space instead of 50 Square

feet and 600 Cubic feet (Section 46).

In Sub-section (f) such open space is dispensed with

on the ground storey if such ground storey and the ground

storeys on either side of it are occupied as shops. This

provision is to meet the case of an owner of a block of houses

who only pulls down the upper storeys of every third house.

In this case the scavenging lane at the back will be required.
